Instrumentation at «Karymshina» observation site has been repaired

VLF direction finder was constructed at IKIR FEB RAS to investigate electromagnetic radiation from lightning. It is capable of recording the magnetic and electric components parameters of electromagnetic field and determine the direction of radiation arrival in real time.

The direction finder is installed at «Karymshina» observation site and it allows one to investigate radiation lightning sources observed in Kamchatka. However, powerful lightning may cause destructive effects and damage the instrumentation applied.

Members of the Laboratory of Electromagnetic Radiation of IKIR FEB RAS, Leading Engineers Kaysin A.V., Sannikov D.V., Stasiy I.E. headed by the Researcher Malkin E.I. have improved the pre-amplifiers of the digital recording unit at «Karymshina» observation site.

They have also updated the electric antenna of the VLF direction finder at «Karymshina» where unsymmetrical dipole was changed by a symmetrical one that makes it possible to record signals with additional protection from close lightnings.
