The Leading Researcher of IKIR FEB RAS, Cand. of Sci. (Phys.-Math.) Cherneva N.V., participated in the 48th Annual Apatity Seminar «Physics of Aurora Phenomena»

The event took place on March 10-14, 2025, in Apatity, Murmansk oblast, on the base of the Polar Geophysical Institute. The seminar was devoted to a wide range of issues including the nature of magnetospheric and geomagnetic disturbances, aurora, wave processes in the near Earth’s space and solar wind, solar-terrestrial relations.

Cherneva Nina made the presentation «Observation of whistlers and height discharges during the eruptions of Bezymynniy and Shiveluch volcanoes» in the section «Ionosphere and upper atmosphere». The authors of the report are the researchers of the Laboratory of Electromagnetic Radiation of IKIR FEB RAS: Malkin E.I., Cand. of Sci. (Phys.-Math.) Cherneva N.V., Kazakov E.A., Dr. of Sci. (Phys.-Math.) Shevtsov B.M.

The author presented the results of observations of atmospherics and whistlers initiated by height electric discharges, occurring during the eruptions of Bezymyanniy and Shiveluch volcanoes in Kamchatka (Russia) on April 7 and 10, 2023.

The atmospherics and associated whistlers were recorded by a VLF direction finder. The whistlers, generated in Kamchatka, were determined by the dispersion coefficient, which corresponded to the even number of signal passages from Kamchatka to Australia and backwards. Electric discharge height was determined by interferograms of direct atmospheric radio beams and those reflected from the ionosphere.

The participants of the Seminar could observe a series of aurora during a substorm on one of the days (see the photo).
