Scientific seminar «Whistler Generation by height lightning strokes» took place in IKIR FEB RAS
Researcher of the Laboratory of Electromagnetic Radiation of IKIR FEB RAS, Makin Evgeniy, made the presentation.
The work was devoted to the investigation of natural electromagnetic radiation and the peculiarities of its generation and propagation.
Lightning, being a spark discharge, generates a wide-band radio signal with the maximum intensity in the very low frequency range that makes it possible to consider global lightning sources as constant sources of radio radiation and use them as a tool during remote sounding of the atmosphere and magnetosphere.
Besides the global lightning sources, regional thunderstorms, occurring during volcano eruptions, are considered as generation sources of pulse electromagnetic radiation. Particular attention is paid to height lightning strokes responsible for atmospherics and spherics occurrences in the radio range arising at the background of heigh lightning activity during the eruptions of Bezymyanniy and Shiveluch volcanoes.
Complex radio observation data were obtained during the volcanic lightning activity in Kamchatka by VLF radio direction-finders and global recording systems for whistlers and atmospherics (AWDANet and WWLLN). A methodology for determination of lightning stroke height, constructed on multiple-beam interferometry method, was developed.
