Two reports were presented at the scientific seminar which took place on March 14, 2014, at IKIR FEB RAS conference hall

The first presentation was devoted to the analysis of wide-band VLF signals of natural origin taking into account regional features of Kamchatka region. It was presented by the Researcher of the Laboratory of Electromagnetic Radiation of IKIR FEB RAS, Malkin Evgeniy Ilich.

The presentation explained the mechanism of two-stage scenario of thunderstorm formation in eruptive clouds, showed the peculiarities of detection of whistler generation sources during Kamchatka volcano eruptions, analyzed the relation of sprites with whistlers. Lightning, being a spark discharge, generating a broad-band radio signal with the maximum intensity in the range of very low frequencies, makes it possible to consider global lightning sources as constantly acting sources of radio radiation. Based on the data of the international AWDANET, WWLLN networks and the IKIR FEB RAS VLF direction finder, statistical analysis of the data was carried out for the period from 2016 until the present time.

The second presentation on the estimate of forecasting efficiency of ionospheric anomalies preceding earthquake occurrences in Kamchatka region was made by the Researcher of the Laboratory of Atmosphere Physics of IKIR FEB RAS, Pavlov Alexey Vladimirovich.

The presentation was focused on the method for a short-term forecast of earthquakes based on the analysis of ionospheric disturbances in Kamchatka region, which were identified by the data obtained from vertical radio sounding ionospheric stations. Estimates of the forecasting efficiency of the methods under consideration for seismic events of Kamchatka region were presented.
