Magnetic storm on November 5, 2023 in Kamchatka

A strong magnetic storm was recorded on November 5, 2023 on the Earth. Based on Paratunka Geophysical Observatory data, local K-index of geomagnetic activity reached the value 6 (within the range 0-9, K=9 is typical of extremely strong storms). Last time, the magnitude K=6 was recorded at Paratunka on February 25, 2023 (http://data.www.ikir.ru/webappfiles/gfo_paratunka/pet-kindex.txt).

The magnetic disturbances were accompanied by intensive aurora, which was also observed at mid-latitudes. The aurora was recorded at Paratunka station by the all-sky camera installed according to the Agreement with the Institute for Space-Earth Environmental Research (ISEE), Nagoya University, Japan (https://stdb2.isee.nagoya-u.ac.jp/omti/). The most bright images was observed at atomic oxygen line of 630.0 nm.

The figure shows magnetic field variations, recorded at Paratunka Geophysical Observatory on November 5, and three selected images, obtained by the all-sky camera at 08:48, 10:23 and 11:15 UT (21, 22 and 23 LT) at the line of 630.0 nm. It is clear that there is an intensive flare in the northern part of the sky (upper part of the image) after the storm beginning. Unfortunately, the camera observations were stopped at 11:40 UT according to the operation schedule, and the sky was partly covered by clouds.
