Medium-term precursors of strong earthquakes of Kamchatka as an example of geophysical field interaction

  1. Kamchatka Branch, Geophysical Survey, Russian Academy of Sciences

The analysis results of occurrence of seismological, geodesic and hydro-geological precursors before thir-
teen strong earthquakes of Kamchatka (MW=6.6–7.8) are presented. The systematization of these precursors
was realized considering their composition and duration before separate events. The relation of precursors
and earthquakes (s=0.38–0.80) was quantitatively estimated. For the precursors before the strongest and the
nearest earthquakes the values of the relation are increasing (s=0.43–1.0). It is revealed, that the duration of
some precursors does not depend on the magnitude of the following earthquakes. The probable mechanisms of
generation of the considered precursors are discussed on the base of modern conceptions concerning earthquake
preparation processes, their relation to regional and local stress fields and the periods of seismic activity increase
in Kamchatka. The self-descriptiveness of the considered precursors for seismic forecast is estimated .
