TECHNOLOGY OF DETECTION OF THE GEOMAGNETIC ACTIVITY INDEX K IN AUTOMATIC MODE

In the paper we propose an automatic method for determination of the K-index, this method is close to the
manual one introduced by J. Bartels as much as possible. The main difficulties of this procedure are connected
to auto-detection of undisturbed variation of geomagnetic field, a so-called Sq-curve. At present, this problem
is very urgent; the existing methods of automating of this procedure do not meet the basic requirement, be-
cause they do not include adaptation means and thus do not consider the features of the input signal structure
and its variability during time, and as a consequence variability of Sq-curve. The authors developed a flexible
technology for detection of Sq-curve in the automatic mode; it is based on the analysis of thin structures of the
input signal. The constructed apparatus is based on the use of non-linear approximations in space of orthogonal
functions. In the process of approbation of the method magnetic data obtained at "Paratunka" observatory (p.
Paratunka, Kamchatka Territory, IKIR FEB RAS) were processed, they confirmed its effectiveness.
