Moving wave packets generated by a solar terminator in the upper atmosphere.
The morphology of a new class of medium-latitude medium-scale moving ionospheric disturbances (MS MID), moving wave packets (MWP) is presented for the first time using measurements of the total electronic content (TEC) according to the global network of GPS receivers for a long time interval from 1998 to 2007. The total number of recorded MWP exceeds 275 thousand. In the time domain, MWPs are narrow-band oscillations of TEC with the duration of about 1 hour with an oscillation period in the range of 10-20 minutes. MWPs are observed mainly 3 hours after the passage of the morning solar terminator, when the TEC derivative reaches its maximum.
